Yarn shrinkage stems from two aspects: the water absorption and swelling of fibers, and the elongation caused by external forces on the yarn. Firstly, the water absorption and swelling of fibers in water can lead to a reduction in yarn length, with the shrinkage rate being greater for fiber fabrics with higher swelling properties.

Fiber swelling increases the effective diameter of yarn, and fibers that cannot elongate or even shorten (measured by the distance the fiber wraps around the yarn axis) can only adjust their position and orientation within the yarn, making the yarn shorter, without causing the yarn to untwist.

Additionally, excessive stretching forces during the wet processing of dyeing and finishing, or the continuous application of stretching forces over a prolonged period without sufficient relaxation, will inevitably lead to yarn elongation and reduced twist in the yarn. Moreover, the water in the wet processing can act as a twist-set on cellulose fiber yarns.

Free-state yarn can fully retract after stretching, but the yarn in the fabric is difficult to recover due to the inter-fiber cohesion and the inter-yarn interlacing resistance. Simply using methods like overfeed sizing and rubber blanket pre-shrinking is insufficient for retraction. However, in a cylindrical washing machine or during a full relaxation water treatment process that allows the fabric to relax completely, the stretched yarn can retract as the fibers swell.
