Rayon, also known as viscose fiber, is a major variety of man-made fibers. It is produced from natural cellulose, which is alkali-processed into alkali cellulose, then reacts with carbon disulfide to form cellulose xanthate, which dissolves in dilute alkali to create a thick, sticky solution known as viscose. Viscose is then processed through wet spinning and a series of treatment steps to become rayon fiber. Its basic composition is cellulose, with regular rayon fibers having a sawtooth-shaped skin-core structure in cross-section, with longitudinal straight grooves. In contrast, high-strength rayon lacks this structure and has a circular cross-section. Rayon fibers exhibit good moisture absorption, with a moisture regain of about 13% under normal atmospheric conditions. After absorbing moisture, they swell significantly, with diameters increasing up to 50%, causing fabrics to feel stiff and have high shrinkage rates. The tensile strength of regular rayon fibers is lower than that of cotton, but their elongation at break is greater. Wet strength decreases significantly, approximately to 50% of dry strength, with an increase in elongation of about 50%. Its modulus is lower than cotton, making it more prone to deformation under low loads and with poor elasticity recovery, leading to easy elongation and poor dimensional stability. High-strength rayon has higher strength, especially wet strength, with less elongation at break and better dimensional stability. Regular rayon has poor wear resistance, while high-strength rayon improves this aspect. The chemical composition of rayon is similar to cotton, making it more alkali-resistant but less acid-resistant than cotton. High-strength rayon, however, has good alkali and acid resistance. Rayon fibers also have similar dyeing properties to cotton, with a full color spectrum and good dyeing performance. Additionally, their thermal properties are similar to cotton, with a density close to that of cotton. Regular rayon fibers have good moisture absorption, are easy to dye, resist static electricity, and have good spinnability, allowing them to be blended with other textile fibers. The resulting fabrics are soft, smooth, breathable, comfortable to wear, and have vibrant colors with good color fastness after dyeing. They are suitable for making underwear, outerwear, and various decorative items. The long fiber variety is lightweight and, in addition to being used as clothing, can also be woven into bedding and decorative fabrics. The drawbacks of this type of rayon fiber include lower tensile strength, lower wet modulus, higher shrinkage rates, and a tendency to deform easily, along with poor elasticity and wear resistance.
