Polyactic Acid (PLA) fibers are derived from lactic acid, which is produced from corn starch, hence the name corn fiber. Lactic acid can also be produced from beets or grains through glucose fermentation, reducing the cost of producing lactic acid polymers. High molecular weight PLA can be obtained through the chemical polymerization of lactide or the direct polymerization of lactic acid. Products made from PLA have good biocompatibility and biodegradability, as well as antibacterial and flame-retardant properties. In degradable thermoplastic polymers, PLA exhibits good heat resistance. PLA fibers have similar physical properties to PET fibers (i.e., polyester fibers), with high crystallinity and transparency. Due to their high crystallinity and orientation, they also possess high heat resistance and strength, and can be spun using standard processing techniques without special equipment or processes. The raw materials for PLA production are abundant, such as beets and corn, which can be continuously cultivated. By not using petroleum or wood, this helps protect limited resources of these materials. The raw material for PLA is lactic acid, which includes -hydroxypropionic acid and 2-hydroxypropionic acid. Due to the presence of an asymmetric carbon atom in the lactic acid molecule, it has two enantiomers, d-type (dextro旋) and L-type (levorotatory). DL-lactic acid, which is a mixture of equal amounts of L-lactic acid and d-lactic acid, does not possess optical activity. Fibrous PLA is made from L-lactic acid monomers. The industrial production of L-lactic acid mainly involves microbial fermentation and chemical synthesis methods.
