Tencel is a trademark owned by the Lenzing Group, which encompasses two main categories: Tencel Lyocell and Tencel Modal fibers. Essentially, it's a trademark combined with fiber categories. So, what's the difference between Lyocell and Modal raw materials?
1. Modal: Beech wood, a tree that thrives in the sun and grows tall. 2. Lyocell: Eucalyptus (eucalyptus bark fabric). In fact, these two types of regenerated cellulose fibers differ fundamentally in the fiber production process. That is to say, the raw material of eucalyptus processed using the Modal process yields Modal fiber, while that processed with the Lyocell process results in Lyocell fiber. So, why is modal more commonly made from beech wood, while lyocell often uses eucalyptus? Because modal was invented earlier, Lenzing AG used locally sourced beech wood; lyocell was developed later, becoming widely popular only in the 1990s. Eucalyptus grows rapidly, performs well, and offers a better cost-performance ratio, making it the primary raw material for lyocell.
