The Difference Between Liquid Ammonia Finishing and Alkali Sulfuric Finishing

Anhydrous ammonia can instantaneously penetrate the interior of cotton fibers, providing a uniform expansion effect that is easy to remove; in contrast, alkaline liquid mercerization works differently. Ammonia's small molecular weight allows it to fully permeate each fiber of the fabric. During alkaline mercerization, the fibers rapidly expand, locking the alkali on the surface of the yarn, which hinders further penetration of the alkali solution.

(2) Liquid ammonia finishing does not damage fibers, and compared to alkali mercerization, the fabric becomes softer. For twill fabrics, there are fewer seams and wrinkles, and less leg creasing and hem abrasion. The fabric also does not degrade, remaining soft even after multiple washes. It also improves the fabric's wear resistance and tear strength, whereas alkali mercerization can damage cotton fibers.

(3) Compared to alkali mercerization, fabrics treated with liquid ammonia have higher dry crease recovery and better shrinkage retention, as well as more even color. However, alkali mercerization does have its advantages, such as a glossy surface and deeper dye penetration. Liquid ammonia treatment results in rounder fibers and fewer slubs, thus resulting in less luster. Additionally, liquid ammonia treatment does not produce alkali-oxidized fibers found in alkali mercerization, which can reduce fabric strength and affect dye uniformity. For more sensitive fabrics like wool or silk, the lower pH of liquid ammonia makes the process safer.

(4) Compared to alkali mercerization, fabrics treated with liquid ammonia exhibit less fiber expansion and are softer, making them more pliable and easier to bend and recover from deformation under tension or pressure. Clothing made from liquid ammonia-treated fabrics is more durable and can withstand multiple washes, resulting in a longer lifespan.

(5) After denim is saponified, it requires extensive water washing to remove the alkali from the fabric. Factories typically do not use drum washers to eliminate the alkali from the fabric, leaving residual pollution. During drying, the cotton yarn can be damaged. Using acetic acid for neutralization can produce sodium acetate, which makes the fabric feel stiff.
