How Fabric is Made Flame Retardant!
Flame-retardant fabrics are made by using chemical additives or phosphorus molecules in the spinning and weaving process, allowing the fabric to extinguish naturally when ignited by a flame. "Flame-retardant" does not mean it won't burn but rather reduces the spread and burning speed of fire, preventing secondary combustion and greater losses. Post-treatment with chemical additives and flame-retardant yarns offer more durable flame resistance.
Currently, flame-retardant fabrics in the market are categorized into three types: 1. Single-use flame-retardant after treatment, achieved by adding a single-use flame-retardant finishing agent, which causes the fabric to extinguish automatically within 1-3 seconds when exposed to an open flame; however, the flame-retardant property is lost after one wash. Single-use flame-retardant involves treating plain fabric through a post-processing method, i.e., soaking in a chemical solution, rendering the fabric non-flammable. 2. Not washable, as it loses flame-retardant properties after one wash, hence the name "single-use." The post-processed fabric does not meet the national standard B1 level, so it may not pass strict inspections. 3. Post-processed fabrics soaked in chemicals have a poor hand feel and become stiff. 4. Fabrics soaked in the chemical solution are volatile, emitting harmful substances and producing a pungent odor after hanging.
