Tencel is the brand name for Lyocell fiber produced by Lenzing AG. It is a high-modulus regenerated cellulose fiber produced by dissolving cellulose in a solution of N-methylmorpholine (NMMO) and then wet-spinning the solution. Production occurs in a closed system, with a recovery rate of over 99% for the organic solvent NMMO, which is environmentally harmless. Lyocell fiber is biodegradable.
Lyocell fibers come in two types: long fibers and short fibers. The short fibers are categorized into two: the non-crosslinked, commonly referred to as Tencel G100, and the crosslinked, known as Tencel A100.
The distinction primarily lies in the production process:
Tencel G100: wood pulp → NMMO dissolution → filtration → spinning → bath coagulation → water washing → drying → curling → cut into fibers
Tencel A100: Wet-laid fiber web → Cross-linking agent treatment → High-temperature baking → Water washing → Drying → Curling
The standard Tencel G100 fiber boasts high moisture absorption and swelling properties, particularly in the radial direction. The swelling rate can reach up to 40%-70%. When the fiber swells in water, the hydrogen bonds and other binding forces between the fiber axial molecules are broken. Under mechanical action, the fiber splits along its axis, forming longer primary fibers. Leveraging the easy primary fiber formation characteristic of the standard Tencel G100 fiber, fabrics can be processed into a peach skin texture.
The crosslinked Tencel A100 fibers react with a crosslinking agent containing three active groups, forming crosslinks between the cellulose molecules. This reduces the tendency of Lyocell fibers to fibrillate, allowing for the production of smooth-textured fabrics that are less prone to pilling during wear.
Tencel is a pure, natural, regenerative fiber, developed by the British company Acordis using natural wood pulp extracted from eucalyptus trees. It is hailed as the "Dream Fiber of the 21st Century." Its features include a softer feel than silk, superior moisture absorption to cotton, and its lightweight, easy-to-wash, and quick-drying nature.
Internationally, the popularity of Lyocell fibers began in the early 1990s, while domestically, research and development started in the late 1990s and gained traction by the end of the decade. Lyocell fibers are known for their high strength, making them suitable for industrial use, and they offer the comfort of cotton, the softness of silk, and excellent drape. This innovative fiber combines the benefits of synthetic and natural fibers, making it a novel addition to the world's textile industry. The emergence of Lyocell fibers has drawn significant attention from fabric developers and apparel manufacturers focused on new fabric development, making it a frequently used term in recent times. Due to their minimal environmental impact during production, Lyocell fibers are also known as "the green fiber of the 21st century."
