What does fabric fibrillation mean?

Cellulose fibrillation refers to the splitting of fibers along their length due to mechanical friction, such as during laundry washing, resulting in nanoscale fibrils that are nearly transparent, often due to increased surface area. This causes the fabric's surface to appear frosted. If fibrillation continues, the fibrils may tangle, forming unsightly white lines and balls. In severe cases, it can render the fabric unusable.
