Inconsistent yarn thickness refers to the degree of variation in the yarn's thickness along its length, also known as yarn evenness. The quality of textiles largely depends on the evenness of the yarn. Yarn evenness inconsistencies are categorized into short, medium, and long segments. The intervals of inconsistency range from 1 to 10 times the fiber length, with less than 1 meter considered short segment inconsistency; from 10 to 100 times the fiber length, with a few meters as the interval for medium segment inconsistency; and from 100 to 3,000 times the fiber length, with intervals of several meters for long segment inconsistency.

When weaving with short, uneven yarn, the probability of coarse nodes or defects appearing in a row on the fabric surface is higher, leading to more fabric defects and a significant impact on quality. Fabric woven with long, uneven yarns will exhibit distinct horizontal stripes, also affecting the fabric quality. In comparison, the occurrence of defects on fabric woven with medium-length, uneven yarns is slightly lower and related to the width of the fabric; notable defects (such as streaks or clouds) appear at certain multiples. Moreover, the weaving process may increase breakage rates and reduce production efficiency. Therefore, the evenness of yarn slivers is a critical indicator for evaluating yarn quality.
