Since silk luster is processed with caustic soda, products like wool and silk that are prone to change when exposed to caustic soda cannot be silk-luster treated. Some blended fiber products with cotton, if the synthetic fiber has a chemical property that is alkali-tolerant, can undergo silk luster treatment, but only the cotton fibers are altered by the silk luster process. There are also silk luster products made from wool now, but they differ from pure cotton silk luster. Wool silk luster involves chlorination or protease treatment of wool to destroy and strip away the wool scales on the surface, reducing the differences in friction coefficients during the forward and backward movements of wool.
