Steam yarn technology is applied in the processes of wool spinning and wool-cotton blended spinning to address issues such as fabric instability and static electricity. As the textile industry evolves, the steam yarn process has expanded to include cotton, linen, and synthetic fibers.

The yarn steaming process.

Preheat the fuselage

During the steaming process, water droplet spots on the yarn are a common defect, which can cause issues with dyeing and other subsequent processes. Therefore, the preheating process for steaming is necessary, especially for woolen yarn.

Vacuum packing

Lower the boiling point of water to produce the required low-temperature saturated steam.

Heating

Steam at low temperatures is permeated into the conical tube yarn. Each production process (spinning, twisting, weaving, etc.) induces tension effects in the yarn and fibers, which can cause the yarn to tangle. The stress relaxation in the molecular structure of synthetic fibers leads to shrinkage. Tension and tangling can pose issues for subsequent processes.

Insulation

The vacuum-to-low-temperature-saturated-steam transition ensures that the entire yarn cake, including packaging materials, is fully treated. The moisture from the cold steam is transferred to the yarn, resulting in uniform moisture distribution and consistent yarn strength and friction values. Additionally, the heat treatment also relaxes the twist.

During the yarn production process, the moisture in the fibers continuously evaporates, resulting in a cumulative reduction in humidity of over 4% from raw materials to the skeins. Different spinning mills have varying yarn moisture indices; increasing machine speed can lead to significant weight (moisture) loss. High temperatures and friction within the machine can evaporate moisture within the yarn, as well as degrade its quality, which is不利于 subsequent processing stages.

Moisture conditioning (steaming) of yarns takes place after winding and before storage. It is preferable to perform this process before delivery if the yarn storage time is extended. Proper packaging during transportation, such as densely sealed wrapping of bobbins or yarn cakes, can maintain the yarn's humidity. Moreover, knitting and weaving can also benefit from moisture conditioning before yarn use. Research on weaving supply and demand shows that yarns treated with moisture are superior to those without (dry yarns). When using moisture-treated yarns for weft weaving, the number of stops on the loom is significantly reduced, the strength and elongation at break of the yarn are improved, the presence of fly纱 is reduced, and weaving efficiency is increased by 2%. In knitting, a significant decrease in fly纱 can be observed.

In trade, buyers never accept additional surcharges; an increase in yarn weight directly translates to profit. The payback period for investments in yarn moisture treatment equipment is typically less than a year, while for cotton yarn, it's even shorter, less than six months. Moreover, the increasing quality demands in export trade necessitate a continuous improvement in yarn quality. Therefore, yarn moisture treatment has become an essential component of modern textile processes, compensating for yarn weight loss and enhancing yarn quality.
