Lyocell fiber is a man-made cellulose fiber derived from natural high polymer cellulose. Invented by Courtaulds plc in the UK, it was later produced by Lenzing AG in Switzerland, marketed under the name Tencel. In China, the product is named after its homophonic pronunciation, "Tian Si" (Heaven Silk).
Lyocell is a novel cellulose fiber produced by dissolving pulp in a N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) aqueous solution, followed by wet spinning or dry-wet spinning using a NMMO-H2O solution as the coagulation bath to shape the fibers. The resulting primary fibers are then stretched, washed, oiled, and dried to produce the final product. This spinning method offers advantages over conventional viscose fiber production, as NMMO can directly dissolve cellulose pulp, significantly simplifying the production process of the spinning stock solution. Additionally, the recovery rate of NMMO can reach over 99%, with the production process almost causing no environmental pollution.
Lyocell fibers have a completely different morphology from regular viscose, featuring a uniform circular cross-section without a skin-core distinction. The longitudinal surface is smooth with no grooves, offering superior mechanical properties compared to viscose fibers, excellent wash size stability (shrinkage rate of only 2%), and high moisture absorption. They exhibit a beautiful luster, soft feel, good drape, and excellent飘逸ness.
