Modal fiber is a trademarked name for a high wet modulus viscose fiber. It differs from regular viscose fiber by improving the low strength and modulus of regular viscose fibers when wet, thus having higher strength and modulus in a wet state as well. Hence, it is often referred to as high wet modulus viscose fiber.
Similar products from different fiber manufacturers have various names, such as Lenzing ModalTM brand fiber from the Austrian company Lenzing, Polynosic, Fortrel, Tencel, and Newal, among others.
The achievement of high moisture modulus performance is attributed to the special process employed in the production process. Different from the general production process of viscose fibers:
Cellulose should have a high average degree of polymerization (about 450).
