Polyactic acid (PLA) fibers are derived from lactic acid, which is obtained from corn starch, hence the term "corn fiber." These fibers can also be produced from beets or grains, helping to reduce the cost of producing lactic acid polymers. High molecular weight PLA can be obtained through the chemical polymerization of lactide or the direct polymerization of lactic acid. Products made from PLA have excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, antibacterial properties, and flame retardancy. In degradable thermoplastic polymers, PLA boasts good heat resistance. PLA fibers share similar physical properties with PET fibers (polyester fibers), including high crystallinity and transparency. Due to their high crystallinity and orientation, they also exhibit high heat resistance and strength, allowing for spinning with standard processing techniques. PLA's raw materials, such as beets and corn, are abundant and can be continually cultivated. By not using petroleum or wood, PLA contributes to the conservation of these limited resources. Lactic acid, which is the raw material of PLA, consists of -hydroxypropionic acid and 2-hydroxypropionic acid. Due to the presence of an asymmetric carbon atom in the lactide molecule, it has two enantiomers: d-type (dextro旋) and L-type (levorotatory). DL-lactic acid, which is a mixture of equal amounts of L- and d-lactic acid, does not possess optical activity. Fibrous PLA is produced from L-lactic acid monomers. The industrial production of L-lactic acid primarily involves microbial fermentation and chemical synthesis methods.
