The shrinkage rate, which measures the degree of fabric shrinkage, is the result of the fabric freely contracting in water in a completely relaxed state during the washing process with a drum washing machine. Not only does the shrinkage occur in the pre-dyed and finished fabrics and garments during relaxed washing, but the knitted greige fabric, when fully relaxed and soaked in water, also experiences size shrinkage, known as shrinkage. The shrinkage process of knitted fabrics during water washing or water relaxation treatment is a result of the combined shrinkage of fibers, yarns, and fabric structure.

Fiber Shrinkage

In spinning, fiber stretching (chemical fibers), weaving, and high-tension finishing processes, fibers elongate due to external force and form internal stresses within the fibers. The drying action under tension and the cohesive forces between fibers, as well as the interlacing resistance between yarns, temporarily fix this elongation and internal stress. When treated with water or steam, water molecules weaken the intermolecular forces between the fiber macromolecular chains, lowering the receding barrier of the macromolecular chain segments. Under the action of internal stress, the fibers will shrink. Long fiber fabrics, yarns with low twist, and regenerated cellulose fiber fabrics are prone to elongation due to external force during wet finishing processes (such as scouring and dyeing), resulting in significant shrinkage. Cotton knitted fabrics, if the scouring and dyeing process uses a loose processing method, the fibers will not be stretched, and the shrinkage rate caused by fiber properties is minimal. However, if a high-tension stretching method is used, a significant fiber shrinkage rate will occur. It is crucial to note that fiber deformation caused by external stretching is difficult to recover due to the cohesive forces between fibers and the interlacing resistance (loop-to-loop junctions) between yarns. Therefore, attention must be paid to controlling the external stretching forces during the scouring and dyeing processes of cotton knitted fabrics.
