Identifying Authenticity of Stainless Steel Elbows

The Copper Sulfate Spot Test - The copper sulfate spot test is a simple method for quickly distinguishing between plain carbon steel and all types of stainless steel. The concentration of the copper sulfate solution used is between 5% to 10%. Prior to conducting the spot test, the testing area should be thoroughly cleaned of grease or any impurities, and a small area should be polished with a soft abrasive cloth. Then, use a dropper bottle to apply the copper sulfate solution to the cleaned area. Plain carbon steel or iron will form a layer of surface copper within a few seconds, whereas the surface of stainless steel will not produce copper precipitates or display the color of copper.

2. Magnetic Testing: Magnetic testing is a simple method to differentiate between annealed austenitic stainless steel and ferritic stainless steel. Austenitic stainless steel is non-magnetic, but it will exhibit a slight magnetic property after undergoing cold working under high pressure; pure chromium steel and low-alloy steel, on the other hand, are strongly magnetic.

2. A notable feature of stainless steel elbows is their inherent corrosion resistance to both concentrated and dilute nitric acid. This property allows them to be easily distinguished from most other metals or alloys. However, high-carbon grades 420 and 440 steel are slightly corroded during the nitric acid point test, and non-ferrous metals are immediately corroded when exposed to concentrated nitric acid. Dilute nitric acid is highly corrosive to carbon steel.

3. Sulfuric Acid Test: The sulfuric acid immersion test for stainless steel elbows can differentiate between grades 302 and 304 from grades 316 and 317. The edges of the test samples should be finely ground, then cleaned and passivated in a solution of nitric acid with a volume concentration of 20-30% and a temperature of 60-66℃ (density of 1.42) for 30 minutes. The sulfuric acid test solution has a volume concentration of 10% and is heated to 71℃. When 302 and 304 steel is immersed in this hot solution, it is quickly corroded and produces a large number of bubbles, with the sample turning black within minutes; whereas the 316 and 317 steel samples are not corroded or react very slowly (no bubbles produced), and the sample does not change color within 10-15 minutes. For a more accurate test, comparative analysis using test samples with known compositions can be conducted simultaneously.
