When the probe penetrates through the mineral cable's insulating layer, the main conductor's semiconductive shielding layer, and the main conductor's insulating layer to the main conductor's conductor, it contacts the semiconductive shielding layer between the main conductor and the ground wire. By passing a constant direct current through the main conductor and the ground wire via the test electrode, and measuring the potential difference at the test electrode, the transition resistance of the mineral cable's semiconductive shielding layer can be measured.
