Morphological characteristics
Perennial, with slender rhizomes. Stems clumped, 30-90 cm tall, with 3-4 nodes, soft texture. The base joints of the plant root. The ligule is about 2 mm long; the leaves are linear, 5-20 cm long, 3-6 mm wide, soft, with fine hairs, and sometimes with auricles. The spike is an upright or slightly curved spike-like inflorescence, 10-20 cm long, 5-8 mm wide; the internodes of the spike axis are about 1 mm long, smooth and hairless; the glumes are lanceolate, about 1/3 the length of the spike, with 5 veins, and narrow membranous margins; the lemma is oblong, herbaceous, 5-9 mm long, with 5 veins, smooth, with a distinct rachilla, and the top is without a bristle, or the upper spikelets have short awns, with lemma about 7 mm long; the lemma is as long as the lemma, with short fine hairs on both keels. The fruit is about three times as long as wide. Flowering and fruiting period is from May to July.
Tall fescue stands at approximately 0.3 to 1 meter (1 to 3 feet) tall, with sturdy, deep green leaves. The spikelets grow along a zigzagged floral axis. Perennial fescue (L. perenne) and Italian fescue have early germination, making them significant components of forage seeds in pastures and meadows. Brome grass is often infected with toxic fungi, and its seeds contain anesthetic toxic substances, posing great danger to pasture animals. Tall fescue belongs to the genus Lolium in the Poaceae family, thriving in spring and autumn with soft, juicy, and palatable foliage, making it an excellent feed for cattle, sheep, rabbits, pigs, chickens, geese, and fish. The forage period is from October to the following May, as it cannot grow during summer. Tall fescue is a perennial tufted herb in the Lolium genus of the Poaceae family, reaching 80 to 100 centimeters in height. It has a well-developed fibrous root system, mainly distributed in the soil layer 15 centimeters deep. The stems are upright, smooth, hollow, and light green. Each plant usually has 60 to 100 tillers, with some reaching up to 250 to 300. The leaves are deep green and glossy, 15 to 35 centimeters long, 0.3 to 0.6 centimeters wide, and often pendulous. The leaf sheath is longer than or equal to the internodes, tightly wrapping the stem; the leaf ligule is membranous, about 1 millimeter long. The spike花序 is 20 to 30 centimeters long, with 15 to 25 spikelets per spike, the spikelets sessile, closely alternating on both sides of the rachis, 10 to 14 millimeters long; with 5 to 11 flowers, and 3 to 5 seeds per fruit. The lemma often degenerates, with a hard texture and 3 to 5 veins, 6 to 12 millimeters long. The lemma is 4 to 7 millimeters long, thin, with a blunt tip, and without a awn; the palea is as long as the lemma, with a sharp tip, transparent, and with fine hairs along the edge. The fruit is ellipsoid. The seed weight per thousand seeds is 1.5 grams.
