Propagation Methods Edit Root Segment Germination Seedling Method Selecting a Site for Seedbeds Choose a seedbed site with a sunny, level terrain and good drainage for the nursery. Before making the seedbeds, apply 1,000 kg of organic fertilizer per mu, 50 kg of carbon ammonium and 50 kg of superphosphate, then till and level the soil. Sprinkle a 100:1 mixture of bran and Monocrotophos bait on the seedbed surface to prevent pests such as termites from underground harm. The seedbeds should be oriented north-south, 1.5 meters wide, and about 12 meters long. The ridges should be 50 cm wide, and the seedbeds should be level with the ground.

Root cutting emissions: Select varieties such as Lu Ci 74068 with stem thickness of 0.2 to 0.5 cm from one-year-old seedlings, cut into root segments of 3 to 5 cm in length, and divide the segments into three groups by thickness. Tie 100 roots into a bundle, store them in moist sand for later use to prevent dehydration and loss of germination ability. Alternatively, cut, grade, and arrange the roots simultaneously. In early March, evenly place the root segments in the prepared warmbed beds, with 300 to 350 roots per square meter, ensuring no overlap. Water thoroughly after sowing, cover with 1 cm of fine soil, immediately set up a greenhouse and cover with plastic film, seal the edges, and dig drainage ditches.

After root covering and film application, maintain the bed temperature between 20-25℃ to promote germination. Germination usually begins around 15-20 days, and the seedlings will be fully emerged around 30 days. During the early stage when temperatures are low, avoid spraying water in the ridges; after late March, as temperatures rise, ensure proper ventilation and cooling when the bed temperature exceeds 30℃ at noon to prevent sunscald on the seedlings. Once the seedlings are fully emerged, water them to maintain moisture and immerse them once in the late afternoon of a sunny day. Pay attention to ventilation and air exchange, adjusting bed temperature and humidity to ensure normal seedling growth. When the seedlings are over 5 cm tall, expose them to the sun and harden them; two days before transplanting, uncover the film all day to acclimatize the seedlings to field conditions.

Seedling Transplantation: The seedling bed should be level and well-drained. Before transplanting, apply 1,000 kg of organic fertilizer per mu, along with 50 kg each of urea and superphosphate. After mechanical tilling and leveling, create small ridges running north-south, with a ridge width of 60 cm and a groove width and depth of 30 cm and 25 cm, respectively. The ridges should be about 25 meters long. Transplant when the seedlings are 5 to 10 cm tall. Due to uneven germination of root segments, transplant in batches. Seedlings or ungerminated root segments can continue to be germinated in a greenhouse. Transplanting should be done from late April to early May, preferably on cloudy days; on sunny days, transplant after 3 PM to avoid the midday heat and prevent seedlings from losing water and affecting survival. During transplanting, first spray water in the furrow, then use a small spade to cut the soil around the seedlings and place them in pots; if soil falls off, transplant the seedlings immediately. Make a 5 to 8 cm deep, straight-walled hole, insert the seedlings against the wall, cover with soil, and water immediately. Plant two rows per ridge, with a row spacing of 45 cm and plant spacing of 30 cm, with about 4,900 plants per mu.

Transplanting care: Water once daily within one week after transplanting to ensure survival. Around mid-May, after seedlings have survived, apply approximately 15 kg of urea per mu and water once; by mid-June, apply an additional 15-20 kg of urea per mu and water again. Timely loosening of soil and weeding promote seedling growth. During the greening-up period, spray 100 times the emulsion of carbaryl to prevent aphid infestation on seedlings; another application is made during the peak growth period. This ensures that the seedlings are over 2.5 meters tall upon dispatch, with most meeting the needs for planting around buildings and large-scale afforestation.
