Phosphoric acid or orthophosphoric acid, chemical formula H3PO4, molecular weight 97.9724, is a common inorganic acid and a moderately strong acid. It can be obtained by dissolving phosphorus pentoxide in hot water. Industrially, it is produced by treating apatite with sulfuric acid. Phosphoric acid is hygroscopic in the air. Heating it dehydrates it to phosphoric anhydride, which further dehydrates to metaphosphoric acid. It is primarily used in the pharmaceutical, food, and fertilizer industries, as well as a chemical reagent.
